Op-Ed: Indiana Gov. Holcomb Silent Despite Other GOP Governors’ Open Support of Constitutional Carry

By: Will Fite

Indianapolis, IN – In the last few weeks, both Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia and Governor Pete Ricketts of Nebraska have openly voiced their support of their States’ desires to pass Constitutional Carry in the 2022 legislative session.

However, as Indiana passed Constitutional Carry bill HB 1077 from the State House to the State Senate, the state’s Republican Governor Eric Holcomb has been silent.

Constitutional Carry is a simple concept that allows law-abiding gun owners to carry a firearm openly or concealed without a government permit or license.

This raises the question of “why?” Why is Governor Holcomb refusing to take a stance on Constitutional Carry while his GOP colleagues from other states call for it?

It is simply because Eric Holcomb is against it. He just doesn’t want to admit it at a time conservatives around Indiana are increasingly unhappy with him.

This isn’t a new trend with Holcomb on the subject of Constitutional Carry. Back in 2016, then Governor-elect Holcomb refused to comment on the legislation.

This would be followed up in 2021 when he said he believes Hoosiers have a constitutional right to carry under the current licensing system.
Indiana appeared to be the first Constitutional Carry state of 2022 when HB 1077 passed the Indiana House of Representatives in just a week.

Upon arrival at the State Senate, the bill’s progress suddenly halted, and it is now in a state of legislative purgatory.

At first, believed to be the doing of Indiana Senate President Pro Temp Rodrick Bray, it now appears to be Governor Holcomb who is pulling the strings to try to kill Constitutional Carry.

This became apparent when during a hearing of the Senate’s version of Constitutional Carry, SB 14, in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter testified against Constitutional Carry in uniform on behalf of the state police.

An act that Superintendent Carter may only do with the expressed approval of Governor Holcomb.

It is now clear that Holcomb’s silence is one of scheming and treachery against the same pro-gun Hoosiers that helped elect him into office.

It is worth noting that if Constitutional Carry were to advance to the Governor’s desk, both the Indiana House and Senate have veto-proof supermajorities.

Any veto against Constitutional Carry by Holcomb would be yet another black stain on the resume of an unpopular governor with higher political aspirations.

  1. Indiana is schizophrenic with a Navy Veteran, Hoosier and Republican governor but less than a third of its counties have proclaimed 2nd Amendment Sanctuary status. Its conservatism has been unraveled a bit by Chicago gangs and petty thieves but much of it probably stays in the northwest corner where criminals easily move their domicile as easily as they change their identities. Regardless of the its attitude regarding constitutional carry, Indiana is ranked 28th for violent crime, less than Kansas and Colorado and about the same as West Virginia and Nebraska.

  2. He was elected because the majority of voters thought they were voting for Eric “when they go low, we kick them” Holder.

  3. With the marxists setting criminals free without bail Americans need to OPEN CARRY as was the case 150 Years ago when the country was LAWLESS.

  4. In Los Angles (once the city of angels) where criminals rob trains of cargo and are set free without bailment CHAOS REIGNS as has been the case where the communists take over countries.

  5. Governor Holcomb has permanently lost my Independent Republican leaning vote for any and all future campaigns he may endeavor to hoax us Hoosiers with, by and through..!
As a 72 month, Honorably Discharged U. S. Army veteran, I consider this arrogant politician to be as disrespectful to those of us who have served in hostile locations and bravely traversed into harms way…..to be the most egregious, arrogant R. I. N. O. to have ever disgraced the high office of Indiana Governor…!

This filthy rich CLOD.. disgusting not only me, but multiple thousands of Honorably Discharged Hoosier Veterans from all branches of the military…
And…. The same goes for this State Police Superintendent Carter…!

We vets were considered safe enough and competent enough to carry high caliber arms into war zones, but this prissy pussy degrades every last one of us veterans, many of which are permanently wounded both physically as well as, emotionally, due to extended periods of intense fighting.

I say to Governor Holcomb and ISP Carter…SHIT ON BOTH YOU ASSHOLES..!

    HOORAH…
    Over and Out..!!!

  6. No representative in government is ever going to be fully in sync with everyone who voted for them, let alone those who did not. An ideal representative should always be willing to at least compromise with the majority on any issue, whether the majority is mostly those who voted for them or not. If a governor does not themself support Constitutional carry of firearms, they should address the issue publicly, giving their argument against Constitutional carry, and then support whichever way the majority of citizens they represent want supported. That is the true intent behind the election of representatives. They are supposed to be supporting the people not their own beliefs and agendas and certainly not the agendas of a political party.
