Tancredo: Mexico and the UN Play Uncle Sam for a Sucker

It has just been discovered that The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), which receives billions in U.S. taxpayer money, is handing out your money to immigrants on the U.S. border. 

UNHCR is literally handing U.S. taxpayer dollars to hundreds of thousands to those loitering in Mexican border towns, waiting for their chance to sneak into America. 

UN documents say the handouts it calls “cash-based interventions” are meant to “restore feelings of choice and empowerment to beneficiaries” so they can keep moving north and loiter at the border for months rather than returning home because of the now-reinstated Trump policy called Remain in Mexico. 

The Mexican government is fine with this, of course, with all those millions of gringo dollars pouring into the country. As a result, the Mexican government now aids and abets illegal immigration across its territory even more than it has in decades past.

When I was in Congress, I took a delegation to Mexico to look at the border crisis and meet with the then-President Vincente Fox. I use the term “delegation” loosely. While it suggests that dozens of my colleagues were willing to address our border problem with the country most responsible for creating it, only two joined me.

We met with several cabinet members while we waited for our appointment with the President. One was Juan Hernandez, newly appointed minister of the newly created Ministry for Mexicans Living in the United States. He is a dual for both the U.S. and Mexico who also taught in the Texas University system. He was amazingly candid when I asked him why such a ministry was created.

“It has two responsibilities,” he said. “One is to increase Mexican immigration into the U.S. The other is to work with the Mexicans living in the U.S. to make sure they don’t go native – that they keep their allegiance to Mexico and keep sending money back home. It is a mutually beneficial situation in that we reduce the dangerously high numbers of unemployed young men in Mexico and you get cheap labor.”

Hernandez was even candid about the one-sided benefits: “Increasing the Mexican population in your country will favorably affect your foreign policy toward Mexico.” 

To accomplish that, Minister Hernandez said he split his time between the U.S. and Mexico, helping in both places to arrange transportation for illegal immigrants to get to the U.S. His ministry bused Mexicans to the U.S. border, where they would walk off the buses and walk into America. (At a different time, I actually watched this happen; Mexican officials gave the illegal immigrants bags of food and water – and told them what to say if they were stopped by the Border Patrol.)

When I told Minister Hernandez that this was not the act of a friendly neighbor, he replied: “Congressman, it’s not two countries; it’s just a region.” His candor eventually got him canned, but he soon found another home – immigration advisor for John McCain’s presidential campaign. 

The Mexican government apparently shut down the ministry, too – but it still runs the program, and not just for illegal Mexican immigrants but for people from all over the world who want to enter the USA illegally. 

Mexico pretends to secure their southern border and cooperate with the Biden administration on their northern border, but in reality Mexican government agencies work with foreign NGOs to dump and then financially support illegal immigrants at the U.S. border using a model Mexican reporters call “operación hormiga” – an “ant operation.”

In other words, hasta la vista, baby. Go suck cash from the stupid Americans.
