Liz Cheney gets a Primary Challenger

Cheyenne, WY — Wyoming State Senator Anthony Bouchard announced that he is challenging Congresswoman Liz Cheney for her seat in the next primary election.

Sen. Bouchard is the first to openly challenge the incumbent congresswoman. Bouchard, who has been a State Senator since 2017, presents a far more conservative option to Cheney, who is widely considered to be a moderate.

However, it is not just Cheney’s moderate philosophy that has conservatives like Bouchard fired up.

Cheney enraged many of her constituents last month with her vote to impeach President Donald Trump. Cheney was one of 10 Republicans to vote with Democrats on impeachment on January 14th. In her statement following the vote, she said, “There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.”

That vote could potentially be career-ending.

President Trump won close to 70% of the vote in Wyoming on November 3rd, and it is already apparent that many Wyoming Republicans are still backing Trump over Cheney. Trump supporters from all over the state are mobilizing against her.

The backlash against Cheney isn’t just limited to her constituents. She is also under fire from some of her colleagues in Congress. That, in itself, is notable as she chairs the House Republican Conference and is one of the most powerful people in the party.

Cheney took a lot of heat last year when, despite her leadership role in the Republican caucus, she supported a primary opponent for Rep. Thomas Massie (KY).

This move against Massie drew heavy criticism from the conservative wing of the House Republican caucus, including Rep. Jim Jordan (OH) and Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL). Cheney later walked back her endorsement of Massie’s primary opponent, but the damage had already been done.

Congressman Gaetz, a noted Trump supporter, has been publicly vocal about his desire for Cheney to lose her seat.

The Florida Congressman took his anti-Cheney efforts on the road to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to host a rally opposing Cheney. Gaetz’s rally had a massive turnout by Wyoming standards, bringing in an estimated thousand supporters.

Gaetz addressed the crowd saying, “You can help me break a corrupt system. You can send a representative who actually represents you, and you can send Liz Cheney home – back home to Washington, DC.”

Rep. Gaetz’s message has consistently been built around the idea that Cheney serves the D.C. Swamp – and not her Wyoming constituents. Given that Liz is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and she is quite familiar with the D.C. “in” crowd, the argument has its merits.

Sen. Bouchard was present at the rally, handing out literature supporting his run.

Gaetz has not endorsed any challenger yet, but Bouchard is the only announced candidate this far. Bouchard is a conservative and Trump backer, so it would be little surprise if Gaetz ended up throwing his weight behind him.

Bouchard’s campaign has already raised tens of thousands of dollars in just a couple of weeks.

  1. The article states that “In her statement following the vote, she said, ‘There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.’ ”

It is obvious that Ms. Cheney has never read the glowing reviews of the film, “Birth of a Nation”, or the glowing recommendation for the group that was the star of the movie, the KKK, that was penned by the former President of both Princeton and the United States, Woodrow Wilson. After President Wilson’s sympathetic endorsement of the Klan its membership surged until at least WW2.

“It is like writing history with lightning, and my only regret is that it is all so terribly true.”

“The white men were roused by an instinct of mere self-preservation until at last there had sprung into existence a great Ku Klux Klan, a veritable empire of the South to protect the Southern country.”
