Albany, NY — Governor Andrew Cuomo’s administration is officially under investigation by the FBI for allegations they hid nursing home deaths. The Times Union first reported on the investigation.
Cuomo issued an order at the beginning of the pandemic requiring nursing homes and long-term care facilities to accept residents who were positive for COVID-19. The New York Attorney General later alleged that this order led to unnecessary coronavirus deaths in these facilities.
The AG’s report alleged the administration undercounted nursing home deaths by as much as 50 percent. The administration eventually added thousands of uncounted deaths, confirming the report.
Worse still, Cuomo’s top aide admitted the administration intentionally covered up the number of deaths to prevent a federal investigation. Following this confession, a NYC Councilman called for Cuomo’s Emmy award for leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic to be rescinded.
President Joe Biden is staying quiet on the scandal, even as others in his party denounce Cuomo’s failure.
The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s office are staying mum on the investigation, though they did not deny it. Spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office, John Marzulli, said they could not “confirm or deny” the existence of the investigation.
The people of New York, and the United States, deserve answers from Cuomo. However, the Governor of New York is refusing to offer any further information to the American people or accept responsibility for the thousands upon thousands of deaths that occurred in long-term care facilities in the state.
