Democrats Aiming to Impeach Trump Next Week

Washington, D.C. — Democrats are aiming to impeach President Donald Trump next week, despite only 12 days remaining before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote in a letter Friday, “If the President does not leave office imminently and willingly, the Congress will proceed with our action.”

That action is likely impeachment.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanded Vice President Mike Pence invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. Pence gave no indication that he would take this action.

House Democrats believe they can draw up articles of impeachment and hold a floor vote by early next week. If the articles pass, and Pelosi sends them to the Senate, the Senate would be obligated to to hold a trial immediately.

The last time Democrats attempted to impeach Trump, the trial took approximately four weeks. That leaves little time for the Senate to actually remove him from office before the inauguration on Jan. 20.

However, if the Senate impeaches Trump, they can prevent him from holding federal office in the future. This would end any rumors of Trump challenging Biden or his successor in 2024.

If Democrats do move to impeach Trump, it will only further divide the country. So much for it being a “time to heal.”
