Bans on Down Syndrome Abortions Gain Momentum

Pierre, SD — Several states are working to ban abortions of children diagnosed with Down syndrome. Gov. Kristi Noem just signed legislation to this effect, following a similar effort in Arizona.

Arizona Gov. Ducey said in a statement, “There’s immeasurable value in every single life — regardless of genetic makeup,” Ducey said in a statement. “We will continue to prioritize protecting life in our preborn children, and this legislation goes a long way in protecting real human lives.”

Ducey signed the bill into law on April 27.

This type of legislation has particularly gained a lot of steam following a 6th U.S. Circuit Court ruling upholding Ohio’s 2017 law which aimed to accomplish this same goal. This 6th Circuit ruling adds another potential challenge to the famed Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, which basically legalizes all abortion before 24 weeks.

Roe v. Wade will be up for debate in the Supreme Court in the coming months, now that the High Court has decided to take up Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

Bans on Down syndrome abortions come at a time where these types of abortions are at an all-time high.

Just four years ago, it was reported that 85% of Down syndrome pregnancies were aborted in Iceland, with that number nearing 98% in Denmark.

These Eugenics-style abortions are becoming more and more trendy worldwide, which is a frightening reality of a pro-abortion society. In the name of eradicating genetic disorders, pro-abortion groups are essentially advocating for wiping out an entire population.

Pro-abortion groups are opposing this legislation, saying it is “a backdoor to personhood,” ignoring the scientific fact that from conception, Down syndrome or not, these are, in fact, people.

The downside of legislation banning these types of abortions is that they are somewhat unenforceable. Doctors can tell their patients not to report the reason for abortion, even though both parties will know it stems from a disability discovered in the womb. At the same time, moderate pro-life politicians can claim victory without actually reducing abortion rates.

Legislation like this is only as effective as the enforcement and will likely do little to slow down abortion, even among fetuses affected by a genetic disorder.

The only way to actually end this type of eugenics is to do what should have been done from the beginning and end abortion in all forms.

  1. Why do we have the “ Amniocentesis “ tests to determine severe birth defects with early testing , so that a family can make the decision to not bring a baby into the world to suffer with a lifetime mental and physical deformities and chronic illnesses . There are certain times to allow abortions !

    1. Everyone I know who has a Downs Syndrome child loves them and raises them the same as a “ normal” kid. Some even grow up to be actors and musicians. One of my sisters was born with retardation and has been a source of joy for the whole family. She just celebrated her 70th birthday and has never been a burden on the family. Heck, she doesn’t even know she suffers from retardation.

  2. Murdering babies is a sin and actually breaking our laws that condemns willful assault and manslaughter. Kids born with Downs Syndrome are beautiful and intelligent beings. Let them live!

  3. ALL ABORTIONS ARE HORRIBLE. WOMEN HAVE NO MORE RESPECT FOR THEMSELFES. IT IS VERY SAD WHEN IT BECOMES EASIER TO HAVE JUST A ABORTION THEN USING BIRTH CONTROL.
IT IS JUST LIKE CHANGING YOUR UNDERWEAR,
WHERE ARE MORALS??? WHERE IS SELF RESPECT?? WOMEN JUST SEEM TO HAVE SEX WITH ANYONE, NO PROBLEM NO WORRIE, ABORTION FREE TO ANYONE IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER.
