Tancredo: Burn Baby Burn

By: Tom Tancredo

Remember the 1966 movie Fahrenheit 451, based on Ray Bradbury’s 1953 book of the same name? It was met with mixed reviews but has since grown in stature to become one of the USA’s classic films.

The book and the 1966 movie are about a futuristic society where no information can be transmitted except by the government, in almost all cases through interactive TV screens. All independent information is prohibited and hunted down for destruction. Books, in particular, are a high priority and must be burned when found. It was the fire department’s job to burn every book that was still around, as well as the structures that housed them. Hence the title Fahrenheit 451, which is the temperature at which paper burns.

Despite this maniacal oppression, there are secret colonies of free thinkers who spend their lives memorizing books so that the knowledge would survive until the hoped-for day when freedom would return. Of course, the plot revolves around one of those firemen who begins to wonder what is so dangerous about unfettered knowledge distribution.

Bradbury was prescient in many ways, but I doubt even he imagined the world he created in his book, and the one portrayed in the 1966 film, would so accurately capture the very real political apocalypse now called liberal totalitarian wokeism.

Fast forward to 2018, when, naturally, a “woke” remake was produced out of fear that the original movie and book would be… “misinterpreted.” Now jump forward three more years, and we have an announcement just released by President In Name Only (PINO) Biden’s Ministry of Propaganda and Misinformation (aka the White House Press Office) that the government is “regularly making sure social media platforms are aware of the latest narratives dangerous to public health that we and many other Americans are seeing across all of social and traditional media… we’re flagging problematic posts from Facebook.”

No, I am not kidding or making it up: The government is pressuring social media platforms to ban thoughts that are unacceptable to the regime and “dangerous” for the populace to be thinking. Jen Psaki, the Secretary of Misinformation herself, actually used those words to explain why the White House has embarked on this course of dystopian mind control. The “press” dutifully reported concerns she and PINO have about the danger of uncontrolled ideas spreading like the Communist Chinese Virus. Oops. Calling COVID-19 by a more accurate descriptor is certainly on the unhealthy information list (or is it? I can’t keep track anymore).

This news broke about the same time as reports about how the Chinese Communists were technologically aiding the Cuban dictator in restricting “unhealthy” thoughts from being transmitted among the thousands of impoverished souls now rioting daily in Havana, the capital of the “worker’s paradise” in the Caribbean. Yep. This is what can happen when people start thinking “unhealthy” thoughts such as, “Gee, I wonder what it would be like to live in a country where the government wasn’t the only source of information?” Or, “I wonder what it would be like to say I will not allow my 7-year-old to play soccer wearing a mask?” Or “I wonder why the government won’t prosecute the person who killed an unarmed protestor at the Capitol on Jan 6?” God only knows what chaos would ensue from the proliferation of thoughts like those.

By the way, Black Lives Matter and AOC have come out in support of the Cuban dictatorship and, naturally, blame America for planting “unhealthy” thoughts in the Island’s huddled masses, yearning to breathe free. These folks may seek our shores to escape mind and body control, but the PINO has told them to forget about trying to get here. They will be turned back because, unlike the hundreds of thousands of Central American “immigrants” infected with COVID-19, the Cubans are carrying a virus much more dangerous to PINO and his totalitarian pals: free thought and a yearning to be free. PINO sure doesn’t want THAT virus spreading here.

I am reminded daily of Fahrenheit 451 and how amazingly close we are to the dystopian future it portrays. I see and hear the way the official organs of government propaganda interpret the news, how they condemn any wayward thinking about essentially any event, how they hunt down those who “spread misinformation (i.e., anything that does not match the propaganda narrative). Books are being removed from libraries and schools, statues depicting historical figures are torn down, curricula are being cleansed and replaced with “healthier” interpretations of American history.

As usual, Victor David Hansen eloquently characterizes the present state of political thought cleansing when he says: “Throughout society today, elites justify their control of or manipulation of information as for the good of the people … It’s the ‘noble lie:’ ‘I’m smarter than you. I’m your platonic guardian. I can lie for your own good…Just don’t dare to suggest I’m lying.’”

The colonies of true academic freedom today are few and far between, but they must be preserved in the same way that those in Fahrenheit 451 worked to preserve the knowledge that the government does not want spread – or even kept. One of the bravest of these colonies is Michigan’s Hillsdale College. I will speak there soon, and one thing I will do is encourage them to even more vehemently and vigorously maintain their oasis of intellectual, moral, and spiritual freedom in the ever-growing vast desert of indoctrination and sociopathic governance.

  1. Time to remake F 451 movie to todays issues alone
More Hi Tech vs orig model

    1. I have a better idea. Send Biden, Harris, and Pelosi to Guantánamo Bay and then leave them there.

  2. Ray Bradbury was not the only one to catch the future , there was George Orwell ” Animal Farm ” & ” 1984 ” , and Paul Harvey ” If I Were The Devil ” & ” Freedom To Chains ” …

  3. When the odious toad Michael Moore made “Fahrenheit 911,” Ray Bradbury asked “When do I get my book title back?”

I was a professor at West Coast University during a time when it offered Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Engineering, Computer Science, and Management. Ray Bradbury gave the last commencement address, at the Wilshire Ebell Theater, before it collapsed due to incompetent (perhaps fraudulent) financial management. The address was moving. He was an excellent speaker and had interesting things to say.

(The name “West Coast University” was bought from the bankruptcy court, along with the responsibility to provide transcripts for ten years, for $25,000, by David Pyle. He knows how to run a university, but West Coast University now teaches on nursing, pre-chiropractic, and other health-related vocations. No Engineering, Computer Science, or Management degrees are conferred.)

  4. Another great and informative piece. Back then, nobody believed such things could happen unless another Hitler came along. Consequently, it was seen in few cities and mostly by propeller caps and eggheads. Farenheit 451 is becoming iconic now because people can relate to it.

Democrats today also destroy statues and monuments, censor conservative thought, rename streets, buildings, bridges, labs, et al., in addition to Hitlerian book burning. Woke nonsense is today’s nightmare. The first time I saw this film was on cable television, after I finished college, in the 70s.

FWIW, I’m a native of Colorado and five years older than Tancredo but I looked up to his work in the U.S. House, even when he spoke to an empty chamber, ensuring that his notions on freedom were recorded in the Congressional Record. We shared contempt for the appalling management of our southern border and still do. Kudos for that too.
