NY Added Nearly 5,800 Uncounted Deaths Attributed to Long-term Care Facilities

Albany, NY — New York added nearly 5,800 uncounted deaths attributed to long-term care facilities after an investigation revealed the state undercounted deaths by up to 50 percent.

The state added the deaths over the last ten days, resulting in a 63 percent increase in deaths.

Until recently, New York did not include deaths for long-term care facilities that occurred at hospitals. No other state omitted the deaths of patients who passed away in hospitals after being transferred from long-term care facilities.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is facing major criticisms for his order requiring nursing homes to accept patients positive for COVID-19. The New York Attorney General’s investigation alleged that this reporting failure led to an increase in deaths in long-term care facilities.

New York’s failure to report these deaths, unlike the rest of the country, appears to be a deliberate attempt to cover up the death totals.

The added deaths did not change the overall total of deaths in New York. New York leads the United States with 45,110 deaths. It places second behind New Jersey with 2,478.
