New York City, NY — Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (AOC) still backs defunding the police despite New Yorkers wanting more officers on the street.
According to a recent poll, 72 percent of likely voters agree “the NYPD should put more officers on the street.” In contrast, only 20 percent of likely voters did not think there should be more officers on the street.
However, AOC endorsed mayoral candidate Maya Wiley on Sunday. Wiley is a radical progressive Democrat like AOC running on a platform to defund the NYPD.
According to Fox News:
Wiley also wants to put a “freeze” on the incoming cadet classes of the NYPD and New York Department of Corrections and “[p]ermanently remove NYPD from mental health crisis management, traffic enforcement, and school safety.”
Of those polled, 57 considered themselves Democrats, 13 percent Republican, and 17 percent independent.
This is interesting considering Democrat leaders like AOC vocally support defunding the police.
Wiley has some ground to make up in the Democratic primary for mayor, according to the poll.
Were the primary election held today, 22 percent of likely voters would back Eric Adams, 16 percent would back failed presidential candidate Andrew Yang, and 15 percent would back Kathryn Garcia. Wiley came in 5th with nine percent.
With such low support for anti-police policies among Democrats, it seems unlikely Wiley will prevail, despite AOC’s endorsement. Only time will tell.

the brainless want to de-fund the police, that is until the criminal, terrorist show up on their door step to burn the houses down. I am willing to bet those that want to de fund have armed security, so in good faith( not part of their of their language) show us by discharging their own security. This will not happen unless they are behind a high wall compound.

Think one AOC is bad? Consider how many people voted to RE ELECT her. And that was after she took credit for blocking Amazon from bringing 25,000 jobs to her district. Thousands of “room temperature IQ” voters with nothing on their minds but more free stuff from government.
