Washington, D.C. — President Biden’s tidal wave of executive orders continues with each new day. The target of the most recent executive actions — President Trump’s pro-life policies.
In 2017, President Trump signed an executive order preventing federal funds from being funneled to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that promote abortion services.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported that this rule prevented more than $153 Million from going to abortion supporting NGOs in 2017 alone. GAO has not reported these numbers from 2018-2020 as of yet.
President Biden publicly leans on his Roman Catholic faith as his guide for public policy. In practice, his actions do not reflect his words.
The Catholic Church’s guidelines on abortion are clear. They have long held the position that abortion is a moral evil.
Even Pope Francis, who is widely considered to be one of the most liberal Popes in history, adamantly opposes abortion. Pope Francis most recently weighed in against Argentina’s abortion legalization effort, saying, “Is it fair to eliminate a human life to resolve a problem? Is it fair to hire a hitman to resolve a problem?”
Biden is already making it clear that he is ignoring his Church when it comes to abortion.
It is unlikely that Biden will settle for just repealing this one pro-life policy. Many are speculating that President Biden will issue executive orders to address Title X funding, which is currently restricted from going to abortion providers.
Title X is a federal program that subsidizes reproductive health care services for low-income patients, helping some afford birth control and other contraceptive products. Title X funding cannot, as it currently sits, go to facilities that provide abortion services, such as Planned Parenthood.
President Biden’s campaign benefitted from an endorsement from Planned Parenthood, so it stands to reason that he will try to address one of their funding roadblocks in Title X.
Among Biden’s 2020 campaign promises was to assist Democrats in Congress in repealing the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment, originally instituted in 1976, prohibits federal funding from going to any abortion services.
Democrats have tried to repeal Hyde for years, but they haven’t had the political capital to accomplish this until now. A Hyde repeal would still be politically challenging with such a narrow Democrat majority in the Senate.
Biden’s swift pro-abortion actions put to rest any idea that his faith would temper his anti-life agenda. The question is no longer if he will take action, but rather, how far will he go for his pro-abortion backers?
