Washington, D.C. — President Joe Biden’s 21 executive orders in his first week in office set a new record for the most by any president.
In fact, the previous seven presidents combined only issued 12 executive orders in their first week as president. Barack Obama issued five orders, and Donald Trump issued four.
Joe Biden | 21 |
Donald Trump | 4 |
Barack Obama | 5 |
George W. Bush | 0 |
Bill Clinton | 1 |
George Bush | 1 |
Ronald Reagan | 0 |
Jimmy Carter | 1 |
The first six presidents combined issued only 18 executive orders over the course of nearly 40 years. Yes, the country was smaller, less populated, less diverse — blah blah blah. Regardless, it demonstrates the massive size of the federal government today.
Biden issued orders on a multitude of topics, including COVID-19, LGBTQ policies, race, education, immigration, and more.
Today, Biden issued another executive order aimed at eliminating privately operated criminal detention facilities. While operating costs of private and state prisons are comparable, private prisons offer states extra flexibility when it comes to issues such as overcrowding.
Private prisons also create jobs. Much like the Keystone XL pipeline, Biden’s order to eliminate federal use of private prisons in the United States will cost thousands of jobs.
The Biden administration has already announced a number of other executive actions and orders planned for the beginning of Biden’s presidency.
