McConnell Says the Filibuster is Safe for Now

Washington, D.C. — Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell announced yesterday that the filibuster is safe for now after two Democrat Senators publicly opposed the nuclear option to abolish the procedure.

The filibuster is a process that requires 60 of 100 Senators (three-fifths) to vote in favor of ending debate on major legislation.

Back in 2013, Senator Rand Paul staged a legendary 13-hour filibuster to delay the confirmation of John Brennan, former President Barack Obama’s pick to direct the CIA. That said, this is not about Brennan (who voted for communist Gus Hall for president in 1976) or libertarian hero Paul.

Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) both went on record in opposition to abolishing the filibuster. These two defections mean the Democrats do not have the votes to do away with the important Senate rule.

The filibuster is one of the best ways to slow or even stop legislation in the Senate. It is imperative to the country and one of the few tools Republicans have left to hold up the radically progressive agenda of President Joe Biden and the Democrat-controlled Congress.

McConnell stated that this turn of events means the Senate “can move forward with a 50-50 power-sharing agreement.”

The American people will still benefit from the filibuster’s ability to reign in total Democrat control of the executive and legislative branches of the federal government.

Of course, it will still take a legislator with guts, like Paul, to throw a wrench into their plans.
