Denver, CO — Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced that a Colorado resident has tested positive for COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7, which first surfaced in the United Kingdom.
This is the first confirmed case of the variant in the United States, although it is likely not to be the only case. In a statement, Governor Polis said that the infected individual is a male in his early 20s and is currently in quarantine. The Governor made no indication on whether or not the individual is seriously ill.
The B.1.1.7 Variant is allegedly more contagious than the standard COVID-19 strain, but more research is necessary to prove these claims.
Pharmaceutical companies, Moderna and Pfizer, are already testing whether or not their vaccines are effective against the new strain.
The expectation from medical experts is that the vaccines will likely prove to be effective against this particular strain. Despite this, many are already bracing for a new wave of lockdowns and regulations.
As we reported last week, New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio is forcing mandatory quarantines on people who have traveled to the United Kingdom, threatening fines and even jail time for people who refuse
the order.
Governor Polis has made no such threat yet, but he is one of the most pro-lockdown Governors in the United States. If more cases of the B.1.1.7 Variant pop up, Governor Polis may force more lockdowns.
The Colorado Legislature, to this point, has abdicated most of their authority on lockdowns to the Governor.
Some are speculating a new spring wave to hit the United States due to the variant, assuming the new strain is as contagious as they say. As we know, politicians will take any loose data point and use it to advance their agendas whenever possible.
If the already approved vaccines prove to be effective against the B.1.1.7 Variant, as expected, then all this fearmongering will again be for nothing, and the variant will be a blip on the radar. The paranoia regarding new strains is already taking over.
Each and every time a slight mutation of the COVID-19 virus surfaces, more panic always follows. For Americans who are already struggling, new lockdowns would be devastating.
