Utah Republicans Boo Mitt Romney, Mike Lee Receives a Standing Ovation

West Valley City, UT Utah Senator Mitt Romney was met with boos and heckling from Republican audience members this past weekend at the GOP’s state convention.

Accusations rang out from the audience, calling him a “communist,” a “traitor,” and a “sell-out.”

Romney heckled back, “You can boo all you like.” “I’ve been a Republican all of my life. My dad was the governor of Michigan, and I was the Republican nominee for president in 2012.”

Mitt Romney spent the last several decades standing to the left of his party, never shying away from his moderate views, even throwing jabs publicly at the more conservative members of the Republican Party.

His support for gun control, signing universal healthcare into law, and his opposition to Trump, leaves many questioning how he ever made it through a primary in a deep red state like Utah.

If Saturday’s Republican Convention is a sign of things to come for Romney, the Republican base is angry with him, to say the least.

U.S. Senator Mike Lee saw a more favorable reaction, receiving a standing ovation as he took the podium.

Lee blasted Democrats in his speech highlighting the U.S. Constitution and Founding Fathers. The audience cheered as he spoke boldly in favor of the Second Amendment and protecting individual privacy.

“Their whole agenda is wrapped up around one idea,” Lee said, “unquestionable trust in government.”

Lee went on blasting President Biden over the Covid lockdowns, “He wants us dependent on government,” Lee said, stating the president wanted “to extend lockdowns. We want to end them!”

Romney and Lee both represent the Republican Party, but at least among the Republican base in Utah, it’s clear, Lee’s brand of conservative politics remains the favorite.
