Washington, D.C. — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she is calling for a commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
She, herself, described the commission as “9/11-type” to “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack.”
This statement comes just a few days after the United States Senate voted to acquit former President Donald Trump of inciting the riot. At the same time, Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) announced his intention to sue Trump over the same event.
Rep. Thompson is filing the lawsuit in conjunction with the NAACP and alleges that President Trump incited an insurrection attempt. They believe that they did not receive a fair trial in the Senate, so instead, they will take their grievances to civil court seeking damages.
Whether true or not, the timing of Pelosi’s commission comes off as another attempt to pin the events of Jan. 6 on President Trump.
Pelosi described her intent to make the commission “independent,” but the execution of that may be difficult. The event itself is deeply rooted in politics, and any findings from this commission should draw scrutiny.
The one change that Pelosi was sure to mention, though, was that she wants the commission to be more diverse than the 9/11 commission, which, as she pointed out, was mostly male and made up entirely by white people.
What bearing the ethnicity and gender makeup of the board has on the “independent” findings is unclear.
Pelosi did, however, confirm that she does not want any members of Congress on the commission. Although she did not elaborate on the selection process for commission members, it’s unlikely that she would take her hands entirely off the wheel.
What does Pelosi hope to accomplish with this new commission, and how long does she want it to last? The 9/11 commission lasted roughly two years, and large parts of its findings were redacted from the public eye.
Pelosi may have the intention of keeping the findings of this commission open to the public, but she did not specify.
The Department of Justice is already conducting an investigation of the Jan. 6 events, as the FBI is still in the process of identifying and arresting those involved in the attack.
If the Speaker wants to move forward with her plan, she will need to call the House of Representatives to vote to form the commission. The rules set forth in that resolution will be telling to what result will come from the commission.
