Military Considers Outfitting Soldiers with Jet Packs

Washington, D.C. — The military is considering outfitting soldiers with jet packs, according to a report from Task & Purpose.

The report states that “…the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) requested ideas for a “portable personal air mobility system” that could be used for special operations, search and rescue, urban combat, maritime interdiction, and even logistics missions.”

The DARPA request also listed “powered gliders, powered wingsuit, and powered parafoils” as possible options for the “portable personal air mobility system.”

So, while U.S. troops may not be strapping on jet packs right away, it is certainly an exciting prospect.

The Pentagon also specified these design goals in its wish list:

  • A range of at least 3.1 miles
  • System is easy enough for troops with “relatively little training” to learn
  • It can take off anywhere
  • Transportable by one to two soldiers
  • Quick assembly of approximately 10 minutes
  • Deployable from land and air

Who knows when the United States might actually deploy soldiers wearing jet packs, but the Pentagon’s interest demonstrates the ever-changing tactics of modern war.

  1. Before deploying these gadgets in combat, I hope the Pentagon considers the possibility of enemy “skeet” cannons. It also would seem to be easily adapted to aircraft strafing tactics.
