Washington, D.C. — Newly sworn-in Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) won her fight to be able to carry a gun at the United States Capitol.
Rep. Boebert has plenty of experience carrying a firearm. She is often seen toting her signature Glock on her hip. When she won her election to the House of Representatives, many questioned whether she would carry (or even if she was allowed to carry) her Glock into the Capitol building. Her answer was always an emphatic “YES.”
Democrats in the House, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, considered changing the rules of the House to prevent Boebert from exercising her Second Amendment Rights at the Capitol, but they appear to have backed down.
With the threat of losing her rights, Rep. Boebert penned a letter demanding that Pelosi refrain from banning guns in the building. Another 82 Congressmen, including Second Amendment Caucus Chair Thomas Massie, joined Boebert and signed on to her letter.
The effort was successful, at least for now, as Pelosi issued her rules for the new Congress, with no ban on weapons included.
The ability for congressmen to carry firearms has been a subject of interest as of late, and not just because of Boebert.
The topic came up in response to the Congressional Baseball Shooting in 2017, when Congressman Steve Scalise, along with a Congressional staff member and a Capitol Police officer, were shot at a Virginia baseball field.
Due to their work in the anti-gun Washington, D.C., none of the victims, save for the police officer, were carrying a gun that day. Had it not been for the Capitol police officers present that day, many more people would likely have been hurt or killed. This tragedy caused many congressmen to fear for their safety and sparked a desire to push for the right to carry in D.C.
Even though the U.S. Capitol Building has a large police presence, congressmen are still targets of potential political violence. Rep. Boebert, standing at a mere 5 feet tall, has decided to take her safety into her own hands and chooses to carry a gun while on the job.
Rep. Boebert is already used to carrying a gun on the job. The freshman Congresswoman owns a restaurant in Rifle, Colorado (Shooter’s Grill) where all the waiters and waitresses carry firearms. It would be far more unusual to see her without her trusty Glock by her side.
As it stands, only Members of Congress are capable of arming themselves on Capitol Hill. Ordinary citizens are not afforded the same rights, but that rule is unlikely to change.
Boebert made herself out to be a pro-gun icon throughout her campaign, and it does not appear that will change now that she is in office. See Boebert’s video celebrating her win below.
