Jacksonville, TX — A quick-thinking citizen door checked a fleeing thief in a Chick-Fil-A drive-through, assisting police in apprehending the suspect.
The Jacksonville police department posted the video to their Facebook page. The department praised the man, saying, “The suspect was quickly apprehended after the “HANGRY” (but helpful) citizen reminded the suspect as to why you should never run from the police.”
The video shows the man opening his truck door at the last second as the suspect ran by, causing him to stumble and allowing the pursuing police officer to tackle him to the ground in front of another vehicle. The helpful citizen can be seen exiting his truck and sliding what appears to be the officer’s taser out of the suspect’s reach.
From a safety standpoint, we do not encourage citizens to directly interfere with an arrest or touch any equipment dropped by police. It is not clear if the officer ordered the man to assist in pulling his weapon out of reach of the suspect as the officer made the arrest. While the man was assisting the officer engaged with the suspect, other pursuing officers may not know whether a private citizen is helping the officer or the suspect.
Police report the suspect was operating a stolen vehicle when he made a run for it across the Chick-Fil-A parking lot.
One comment on the post imagined that the helpful citizen was thinking, “not in God’s drive thru” when he stopped the fleeing thief.
