St. Louis 2020 Homicide Rate Exceeds Previous 50 Years by 30%

St. Louis, MO — The St. Louis 2020 homicide rate exceeded homicide rates over the last 50 years by 30 percent, according to a report from the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

The homicide rate reached a staggering 87 in 100,000 residents in St. Louis in 2020.

There were 262 total homicides in the city of St. Louis and 92 total homicides in St. Louis County. In 1993, the city reported 267 homicides. That is five more than last year’s total, but there are some 87,000 fewer residents in the city in 2020.

The 2021 homicide total sits at 18. Five of the cases are closed while 13 remain open, according to a report from the St. Louis Police Department. Three are deemed justifiable.

St. Louis saw 5,793 violent crimes in 2020. That puts your chances at becoming the victim of a violent crime in the city at 1 in 52 residents. Neighborhood Scout places the St. Louis crime index at 1 out of 100, with 100 being the safest.

North and East St. Louis see the highest rates of crime in the city.
