Washington, D.C. – Republicans want to penalize Sanctuary Cities. A “Sanctuary City” is a city or any government entity where their policy is to protect illegal aliens from federal law enforcement.
An example of a Sanctuary City Policy would be a Swedish national who is in the United States murders someone. He is arrested for murder. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Department of Justice all want to pursue actions against the Swedish National. The Sanctuary City refuses to cooperate with the federal agencies, and in many cases, would release the criminal so he can avoid deportation. This is a Sanctuary City.
Republicans in Congress led by Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee) and Congressman Ken Buck (R-Colorado) have introduced legislation that would block Sanctuary Cities from getting funds from federal law enforcement and public safety. This makes sense, if a Sanctuary City doesn’t cooperate with the feds, then why should they get federal money.
However, this bill is narrowly tailored to municipalities that give driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. A driver’s license legitimizes these criminals by giving them a government issue ID.
This legislation is long overdue. Unfortunately, with the Democrats controlling the U.S. House of Representatives, don’t expect this law to pass.
