Republicans Poised to Make Gains in U.S. House After 2020 Census

Washington, D.C. — Republicans are poised to make gains in the U.S. House after the 2020 Census results were released.

According to the results, Republican-majority states Texas, Florida, and South Carolina are all poised to gain Congressional seats due to population growth. On the other hand, Democrat-dominated states like California and New York recorded population declines resulting in a loss of Congressional seats.

Colorado, Montana, and Oregon will all gain a Congressional seat, as well.

Texas, which saw a huge population boom, will gain two seats, while the other five states will gain one.

Though Democrats hold total control of Colorado, a bipartisan commission is tasked with redistricting rather than the ruling party like in most states. Whether or not that results in Republicans gaining a seat in Colorado remains to be seen. However, the likelihood that Colorado gains a Republican-held Congressional district after redistricting is higher than that of Democrat-controlled Oregon.

Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia all lost Congressional seats according to the 2020 Census.

U.S. population growth was the “second-slowest of any decade in history,” according to Reuters.

The overall U.S. population stood at 331,449,281, the Census Bureau said on Monday, a 7.4% increase over 2010 representing the second-slowest growth of any decade in history.
