Pelosi Retains Control of House With a Narrow Dem Majority

Washington, D.C. – Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) retained control of the House with a narrow Democrat majority. She ran for Speaker of the House unopposed.

This is only a caucus nomination. Pelosi must receive 218 votes on the House floor when the new Congress resumes to officially become Speaker of the House.

So far, Republicans have gained eight seats in the House, defying pre-election polls.

Republican gains put Pelosi in a tight spot. She can only afford to lose a few votes from the Democrat caucus to retain her position.

The 80-year-old House Speaker promised in 2018 that she would step down by 2022.

Some Democrats speculated that Pelosi might not follow through on her promise – it is easy to see why.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) also retained their leadership positions. That marks 14 years of the same three Democrats holding power in the House.

With Joe Biden projected to win the White House, it is clear the Democrat’s old guard still controls the party.
