Minneapolis Slashed Police Budget by $8 Million

Minneapolis, MN — Minneapolis slashed the police budget by $8 million when the City Council passed the budget on Thursday morning, according to Fox News.

The budget cut is in response to police protests sparked by George Floyd’s death while in Minneapolis police custody. Many of those protests turned to violence and vandalism. Crime is also on the rise in the city.

Earlier this year, the Minneapolis City Council considered dismantling the police department and replacing it with unarmed responders for many calls currently handled by the police.

The President of the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, Bob Kroll, had this to say about the budget cuts.

“The City Council is decimating the police department,” Kroll said. “The number of working officers is the lowest it’s been in 50 years. Murders, shootings, and other violent crimes are approaching record levels. Our officers are severely overworked, understaffed, and cannot keep the public safe with these cuts.”

Mayor Jacob Frey initially threatened to veto the budget unless a provision decreasing the maximum number of officers from 888 to 750 was removed.

The $8 million is coming out of a $179 million police budget.
