Washington, D.C. — Five Senate Republicans support proceeding with the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump despite constitutional concerns raised by Senator Rand Paul (R-KY).
Paul raised a motion calling into question the constitutional legitimacy of impeaching a president after they leave office.
The 55-45 vote on the motion likely puts the prospect of the Senate convicting former President Donald Trump out of reach. Two-thirds (67 members) of the Senate must vote to convict. Otherwise, the second politically motivated impeachment trial of Trump will end in another acquittal.
These are the five GOP senators who voted to continue with the impeachment trial:
- Senator Lisa Murkowski (AK)
- Senator Susan Collins (ME)
- Senator Ben Sasse (NE)
- Senator Pat Toomey (PA)
- Senator Mitt Romney (UT)
Constitutional or not, an impeachment trial of Trump sets a dangerous precedent and threatens to further divide the country.
Impeaching Trump now that he is a private citizen sets the precedent that impeachment is a political tool used to punish political enemies after an election. The end goal of this new precedent is to bar the impeachment target from ever holding federal office again.
If a final vote to convict Trump is once again unsuccessful, it will deeply divide the country. If Trump is convicted at the end of what is sure to be a contentious trial, it will deeply divide the country. In this case, numerous GOP Senators will then face contentious primary challenges that (whether successful or not) will fracture the Republican party.
There is no unity in proceeding with an impeachment trial.
