New York City, NY – Why is Facebook trying to shut down a New York University study on targeted political advertisements? Are they hiding something?
It is an important question.
An impressive 6,500 volunteers are using a browser extension to collect information for the researchers. Facebook wrote a letter to the research team claiming this scrapping method is “not permissible” and threatened “additional enforcement action.”
This is what one researcher had to say about the threat from Facebook.
Laura Edelson, a researcher at NYU that is working on the study, claims that their team has no plans to shut down the project. “The only thing that would prompt us to stop doing this would be if Facebook would do it themselves, which we have called on them not to do,” Edelson said.

While Facebook might just do that, it will put them in an awkward position. Taking enforcement action will almost certainly draw more attention to the study.
So, is Facebook hiding something?
It could be as simple as Facebook protecting industry secrets. It could also be more sinister.
Perhaps, Facebook does not want this study to show biased algorithms in political targeting. That would certainly stir up animosity towards the social media giant.
Whatever their reason, Facebook obviously feels threatened by this study.
For a social media company with such strict transparency requirements for political advertising, Facebook is not providing much transparency in return.

fb is following through on what they said months ago, that they would suppress all Republican, especially conservative voice starting the 1st of Oct. and they did. They said over a year ago they would play in the 2020 elections in favor of the liberal/socialist, formally know as democrats. People forget fb and the others are private platforms, their rules, their choice about what gets seen , what gets deleted, and some time words get changed, some of my friends as well as I have had this happen. Those that run these platform do not like any one challenging them, and they will attack any one who they deem a threat. I got to give NYU credit for doing what they are doing considering generally they fall on the liberal/socialist side. I think fb, and the other are worried that they will be called to testify before congress, may be under oath, especially if the Repubs gain control, at which point the dreck could hit the fan. I think “We the people… deserve an accounting of the fb. etal actions, and the platforms should adhere to our 1 st amendment, time for all to be treated equal, just my opinion. Wonder what others think?
