Trump Signs Massive Spending Bill to Avert Government Shutdown

Washington D.C. — President Donald Trump signed the massive spending bill passed by Congress to avert the impending government shutdown.

Trump signed the bill Sunday night. He faced pressure from both Republicans and Democrats.

The bill included $600 stimulus checks for so-called COVID relief.

These people will receive a full-sized stimulus check:

  • Individuals with a 2019 adjusted gross income of less than $75,000
  • Heads of a household who make less than $112,500 per year
  • Couples making less than $150,000 per year

Eligible families with children under 17 will receive an additional $600 per child. Checks will be docked by $5 for every $100 earned over the baseline adjusted gross income.

The House is expected to take up a measure to replace the $600 stimulus checks with $2000 checks. It is unclear if this will pass the House, let alone the Republican-controlled Senate.

The COVID-19 relief package included in the bill amounted to some $900 billion. Overall, the massive bill cost over $2.3 trillion.

Six Senate Republicans opposed the bill, as well as a number of GOP House members. Senator Rand Paul called it a “spending monstrosity” – for a good reason.

Lawmakers packed the bill with wasteful spending. It includes massive amounts of foreign aid while Americans struggle at home and even money to purchase cars for certain people employed by the government.
