Atlanta, GA – Georgia State Representative, Ginny Ehrhart (R-Marietta), proposed making the performance of gender transition surgery for minors a felony. Current law requires parental approval for gender transitions.

“We’re talking about children that can’t get a tattoo or smoke a cigar or a cigarette in the state of Georgia but can be castrated and get sterilized,” she said.

Ehrhart is reportedly motivated by the James Younger case in Texas. The biological boy’s mother insists the child should undergo a gender transition. A Judge in the case recently ruled in favor of Younger’s mother.

The move would protect children like Younger from irreversible procedures and years of potential mental distress. Ehrhart’s proposal covers procedures such as castration, mastectomy, vasectomy, and other types of genital mutilation. It also bans the prescription of hormone-altering and puberty-blocking drugs for minors. The proposed legislation will not criminalize doctors for helping adults perform gender transitions.

The idea that young children are capable of making these life-changing decisions is absurd. Adults who believe that must stop kidding themselves. We know countless adults who still do not know what they want to be when they grow up. Expecting a child to make the correct decision for themselves is outrageous.

It is highly unethical to perform irreversible gender transitions on children who may later change their minds. Kids change their opinions all the time. Furthermore, their opinions are strongly influenced by their environment. As such, the potential to confuse children into believing they are something they are not is nearly endless.

Children are in a constant state of flux. Why would any adult want to assist or even push children to make a life-changing decision they may eventually regret?
