Washington D.C. — Stef Feldman, who served as National Policy Director for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, outlined Joe Biden’s gun control plan in the early days of his administration.
Feldman stated, “make big, bold changes through executive action, not just on policing and climate like we talked about previously, but in healthcare and education on gun violence, on a range of issues.”
This should come as little surprise, as Biden made clear that gun control is one of his top policy priorities.
Biden’s policy goals include universal gun registration, so-called gun “buyback” programs, and new taxes on rifles and handguns.
The tax plan would include a $200 tax on semi-automatic rifles as well as a separate $200 tax levied on each “high-capacity” magazine, which Biden defines as ten rounds or more. Biden’s proposal also includes a $10,000 fine and felony charges for those who refuse to comply.
The fates of Biden’s larger policy goals are dependent on the results of Georgia’s runoff election taking place on January 5th. Two seats in the United States Senate are in play, with both Democratic candidates openly supporting Biden’s gun control platform.
The more realistic path for Biden is to go the executive order route. Throughout the years of the Obama administration, President Obama frequently used executive orders to implement gun control.
Obama used such orders to ban firearm imports from certain countries, expand the national instant criminal background check system (NICS), and go after veterans and seniors who owned firearms.
Stef Feldman remained ambiguous about the specifics of Biden’s gun control plan, but she did emphasize that the incoming administration believes it has the legal authority to make “bold changes” through executive orders.
If Biden’s past work in the Obama administration is any indication, gun owners should brace for the worst on Inauguration Day.
One avenue the Biden administration is likely considering is an expansion of President Obama’s import bans. Leftist gun-control groups are already pushing Biden to issue an executive order banning the importation of all “assault weapons.”
Biden may also pursue restrictions on magazine and ammunition sales. If he is unable to act as broadly as he wants to on guns, he may seek to limit the usage of the tools necessary to make them function.
Perhaps the most likely option for Biden is to expand NICS. Through this system, Biden can expand the list of Americans deemed ineligible to own a firearm. The Federal Government has taken numerous steps over the last few years to grow the NICS database, mostly targeted at our nation’s military members. An expansion of NICS could result in thousands of veterans losing their right to bear arms.
Time will tell what “bold changes” Biden has in store for America’s gun policies, but expect the Biden administration to move swiftly against gun owners in its first few weeks.
