Washington, D.C. — Secretary of State Antony Blinken displayed the Mexican flag upside down in a call with the Mexican Foreign Secretary on Friday.
Journalist Ariel Moutsatsos noted the in a tweet, stating, “With the flag of Mexico upside-down, Secretary of State [Blinken] began a virtual visit to the country.” He even included a helpful emoji of the flag (right-side up) so Blinken could correct the mistake in the future.
Moutsatsos followed the tweet up by tagging the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, saying, “The Mexican flag is upside down.”
Flags intentionally flown upside down are traditionally a sign of distress. They can also symbolize protest and disrespect.
The incident led some Twitter users to speculate about whether the upside down Mexican flag was a coded message, though it was most likely a mistake that should have been caught before the high-level meeting.

People should write these numbers down and use them frequently even if you don’t think your elected officials listen, they are required to note your comments for the permanent record in their caller database for anyone to see.

As a frequent visitor to Mexico, I can testify that Mexicans are very proud of their flag, considering it the most beautiful flag of the world. To fly it upside down is either idiotic, or a sign of disrespect. Or both.
Have some respect for other countries when contacting them . Fly their flag correctly. We would find it a big insult for the Mexican leaders , or any other to insult us flying our flag upside down.
